Which wolf will you feed?

There’s a story I love that has been around for ages, and has recently begun it’s resurgence in internet circulation. I love the simplicity of it’s message, so I thought I’d share the story of an old Cherokee chief teaching his grandson about life.

“A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.”

“One is dark — he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self-doubt, and ego.”

“The other is light — he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

“This same fight is going on inside you — and inside every other person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?”

The old chief simply replied, “The one you feed.”

Which wolf will you feed today?

Namaste.

  1. How strange, I know this story as a Buddhist teaching tale involving dragons. I totally agree with the theme of what you feed/starve – but it’s a pity we all make these associations with light and dark. I was thinking that just the other night as I walked my lovely greyhound, looking at the dark velvety sky with the stars only showing dimly through the cloud cover. So many of us would be scared to meet a large black dog on a dark night – or it would be used in a film or book to convey threat and menace – yet it was the most beautiful and peaceful scene.

    • Very true. I think the point isn’t about avoidance but what to nurture. We can acknowledge and embrace that there IS darkness and fear in each of us, but we can choose to nurture our love and compassion.
