What do yogis eat?

kale-cranberry-saladSounds like the start of a joke, right? ‘What do yogis eat?’ But, I asked myself that very question when I decided to take my spiritual practice to another level.   If we extend the practice of yoga and our rules of life & living — the yamas and niyamas — into every aspect of our days, then we should be conscious about the food we put into our bodies.  Foods without chemicals, antibiotics, or cruelty.  Clean foods.

In general, I try to find out where my food came from and whether or not it is free of chemicals, growth hormones and pesticides.  Aside from these basic rules of clean eating, I try to put as many fruits and vegetables on my plate as possible.  If my plate is colorful, I feel good knowing that I’m getting nothing but nutrients — brain food, mood food, and heart food.

Concerned about the price of some organic food?  Check out the article, “What to buy organic: Environmental Working Group releases 2012 Shopper’s Guide,” to see which foods have the highest pesticide levels.

According to Local Harvest, the best organic food is what’s grown closest to you. Check out their site to find farmers’ markets, family farms, and other sources of sustainably grown food in your area.

Live well.  Eat often.

Namaste.

  1. Ha! And now let’s start the fun discussion about meat and how eating it can be reconciled with ahimsa 😉
But you’re of course so right, at one point the yoga we do outgrows the narrow borders of our sticky mats!
